FAQ
Questions people ask us
What is Nefra Health?
Nefra is a diet tracker for people living with chronic kidney disease. Take a photo of a meal, or describe it, and Nefra estimates the potassium, phosphorus, sodium, protein and calories, then compares them with your daily limits.
Does Nefra replace my doctor or dietitian?
No. A decision-support tool; clinical validation is in planning. Not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always talk to your nephrologist or renal dietitian before changing your diet or medication.
Which foods are safe for CKD?
It depends on your CKD stage and your blood results, so there is no single list that suits everyone. Foods often lower in potassium include apples, berries, grapes, cabbage, cauliflower and peppers. Foods often higher in potassium include bananas, oranges, potatoes and tomatoes. Phosphorus is often high in dairy, nuts, seeds, dark colas and processed foods with phosphate additives, and processed foods such as canned soups and deli meats are often high in sodium. Your renal dietitian can tell you which limits apply to you.
How does Nefra track nutrients?
AI identifies the foods in your photo or description and estimates the potassium, phosphorus, sodium, protein and calories. You see your daily totals against limits based on your CKD stage and KDIGO guidelines, along with your trends over time. The values are estimates, not laboratory measurements: portion sizes can vary and hidden ingredients such as added salt may not be detected.
How accurate is the food analysis?
Accuracy depends on photo quality and how visible the food is. The guidance is KDIGO-based. Nefra is being developed in line with EU MDR Class IIa requirements, with CE marking planned after clinical validation. Our accuracy targets and validation plan are published on the Science page.
Which subscription plan suits me?
Free (£0) includes 3 AI food scans a day, all five tracked nutrients and 7 days of diary history, so it is a good place to start. Essential (£4.99/month) adds 12 scans a day, unlimited diary history, weekly reports with PDF export and email reminders. Premium (£9.99/month) adds 30 scans a day, FHIR R4 export, caregiver sharing and priority support. See the Pricing page for the full list and current availability.
Is my health data protected?
Data is sent over encrypted connections and handled under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. We do not sell your personal data. You can export your data or ask us to delete your account from your privacy settings at any time. Food photos and descriptions are sent to third-party AI providers for analysis; our Privacy Policy explains who processes your data and why.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes. Food analysis runs in the cloud, so scanning needs a connection. You can install Nefra on your phone from your browser for quick access.
Which languages does Nefra support?
The Nefra app is currently available in English.
Can my clinic use Nefra?
Clinics can request a pilot by emailing us. We will explain what is available for your service.
